Room Planning

Match the Size to the Room

As a starting rule, keep the sofa to roughly two-thirds of your wall length and leave at least 30 inches of walking clearance around it.

Small Room

Under 120 sq ft

A loveseat or a compact two-seater keeps circulation open. Pair with a slim console instead of a bulky coffee table.

Medium Room

120–220 sq ft

A standard three-seater, or a three-seater with one accent chair, balances seating without crowding the walkway.

Large Room

220 sq ft +

Sectionals and L-shapes read proportionate here, and give you a defined zone in an open-plan layout.

How It Works

Sofa Functions Explained

Size gets you in the room; function decides how the sofa actually gets used day to day. Here's what each mechanism does and who it suits.

Stationary / Fixed

A single fixed frame with no moving parts. Simplest construction, most durable long-term, and the easiest to reupholster later.

Best for: everyday living rooms, families with kids or pets

Reclining

Manual lever or powered motor tilts the backrest and raises a footrest. Powered versions need a nearby outlet and add weight to the frame.

Best for: media rooms, anyone who wants a dedicated relax seat

Sofa Bed / Sleeper

A pull-out, fold-out, or click-clack mechanism converts the seat into a mattress. Check the folded mattress thickness — thinner isn't always worse.

Best for: guest rooms, studio apartments, occasional overnight guests

Storage

A hinged or lift-up seat base reveals a compartment underneath — useful for throws, bedding, or seasonal items without an extra cabinet.

Best for: smaller homes short on closet space

Modular / Convertible

Independent sections connect, detach, and rearrange, so the layout can shift from a straight sofa to a corner sectional as your room changes.

Best for: first apartments, open-plan spaces, frequent movers

Before You Order

How to Measure Your Space

01

Measure the wall

Note the full length of the wall the sofa will sit against, including any outlets or vents to avoid.

02

Check the doorway

Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway, or stairwell the sofa has to pass through on delivery day.

03

Leave walk space

Keep at least 30 in (76 cm) of clearance for walkways and 14–18 in between the sofa and coffee table.

04

Mark it out

Tape the sofa's footprint on the floor for a day before ordering — it's the fastest way to catch a size mistake.
